The group was formed in 1985 to support the new and simultaneously established Bolton Steam Locomotive Company Ltd, which owns 73156, and to help achieve its aims of restoration. Some group members have always been physically involved in this process whilst others have been attracted by hearing of our endeavours.

Our collective aim and objective is to restore 73156 to full running order and to operate the loco on Heritage railways throughout the U.K., whilst remaining essentially Loughborough based at the Great Central Railway. We have a widespread membership and are continually looking to recruit new people willing to support our first aim , i.e. restoration, and beyond when restoration is completed, with whatever skills or talents they may feel inclined to offer. Having limited skills or not wishing to become too involved is no barrier to joining. Many simply join in a non-active capacity and are equally welcome.

Group Membership entitles one to our four monthly issued journal called 'The Standard' which updates recipients with the restoration process and features other Group related topics on the steam age as supplied by members. Also, our website, www.73156standard5group.co.uk, is always worth viewing.

Following purchase for preservation in 1985, 73156 was initially located at the East Lancashire Railway, Bury, but is now based at the Great Central Railway, Loughborough, where restoration will be completed under a joint agreement with the Loughborough Standard Locomotives Group. The L.S.L.G. has under its wing several locomotives, either operational, undergoing overhaul or under restoration. Excellent facilities exist at Loughborough where 73156 will primarily be based upon completion. Both the Support Group and the Company have strong links there and in the progressing work.
